حرصاً من الوزاره الموقره على ايصال الفكره الواضحه للحاجة من تغيير كليات التربيه الخمس إلى كليات علوم التطبيقية, ولتوضيح التصميم بشكل اوسع للمجتمع وسوق العمل,

ارتأت الوزارة الى عقد مؤتمر الأول من نوعه,, والذي يختص بتخصص التصميم. وقد اختارت كليتنا لتنظيمه ( كل الشكر والتقدير للوزاره على الثقه التي اوكلتها إلينا)

Forward Note


Designs are seen and appreciated everywhere. The history of human civilization has very clearly shown that as beings we need to make and depend on things to survive. Whilst we do not deny the fact that certain things are born or naturally sculptured through certain laws of nature and also as a symbol of Allah's creation we also desperately realize the importance of making new things ourselves in order to assist in our trip and journey to survive and contribute to mankind. This is one of the biggest challenges ever experienced by man…creating and making things for the fellow citizens of the world. So we DESIGN. What is design anyway? We need shelter, clothes to wear, food to eat, vehicles to travel etc. We see and use designs 24 hours per day, from the tip of our hair to the bottom of our toe. We are seemingly so very dependent on design as such that it would be frightening to mobilize and exercise daily life without this gigantic factor - Design. Is it good or bad? Something we constantly need to ask ourselves. The population of design is certainly far beyond the population of mankind. As designers we must always thank Allah the Almighty for His precious gift of talents to us and we must continue to enrich our knowledge in order to uplift human dignity and quality of life, and thus making us closer to Allah through our creative ideas.

In the spirit of wanting to extend and expand the modes of appreciating designs and their varied disciplines to the masses, the Design Department, Ibri College of Applied Sciences, Sultanate of Oman is taking a bold step in organizing its first Design Conference and Exhibition on the 27th and the 28th April 2008. The Design Conference will be held at the Mesarat Hall and the Exhibition at the Room 007 and Room 008 and Design Workshops to be conducted at the Design Computer Lab.

Conrad Ozog is currently Program Director for Design and Communication in the Colleges of Applied Sciences in Oman. Before coming to Oman he was Director of Internationalisation and Chair of Communication in the University of Western Sydney in Australia. He has long history of academic and program management and has taught in universities in the UK, Norway, Malaysia, Brunei and Australia. In addition he has lectured and consulted widely in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. His current research activities are in the fields of cross cultural and linguistic communication, and the internationalisation of education. He has a particular interest in the relationship of Design to Communication in different cultural settings.


Abstract
New Art, New Design or New Communication?

This paper is an attempt to place Design in a spectrum that extends from Fine Art to Communication and perhaps beyond. Over the last 20 years as Design has emerged as discipline in its own right breaking free from traditional art. However, at the same time convergence was taking place making it difficult, and indeed undesirable, for disciplines such as Design to maintain academic independence. This paper looks at the place of Design in today’s academic world and takes a view that Design with its emphasis on critical thinking and practicality is a key partner in the New Communication and as such should be a central subject in university programs

Abstract

Information technology advancement becomes one of the key indicators of a nation’s progress and ability of keep pace with globalization. Innovation, modernization of advanced technology allowed organization and companies to present new ideas and open new markets to satisfy customer needs. Effective marketing requires careful planning. Marketing plans must be based on clear, realistic marketing strategies.

Tamer Ibrahim Hassan

Hassan got his Applied Arts’ Bachelor in 1997 “Photomechanical Process and Printing”, received his Master in 2003 “Printing, Packaging and Publishing”, worked as an Art Director in an Egyptian and British Ad. Agencies during 1997-2003, Worked as a Design and Prepress manager for Saudi group of Publishing and Packaging firms between 2003-2006, experience in Color management systems in Printing and packaging workflow using Mac &Win platforms convenient for Digital output systems. Tamer is currently a lecturer at the Design Department, College of Applied Sciences, and Sultanate of Oman.

« Digital Technologies in the Design Future»

This paper outlines the Digital Design in general through surveying different technologies and their application into Design field. It helped in getting an overview about digital design “History and Practices” in addition to explain the intersection between digital design and other design disciplines which provides us with new career opportunities. The goal of this paper is to provide Omani with an overview about the practical influence which has been done through new Media.

Aziza Maher Abou Elsoud

Aziza Maher is currently the Head of the Design Department at the Nizwa College of Applied Sciences. She received her Diploma in Industrial Design in 1998 and gained her Master degree in the same area in 2004 from the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University, Cairo. Aziza is now pursuing a pre PhD in Industrial Design from the same university.

Abstract

Inclusive Design, Fantasy or Reality?

At some point in our lives, activities that many people will have taken for granted begin to present problems that they may not previously have thought about. However, the fault does not lie with the user but with the poor design of products and services. All products exclude some users, often unnecessarily, and Inclusive Design (an umbrella term for the broad collection of approaches, methods and practices for designing inclusively) aims to highlight and reduce such exclusion. An understanding of inclusive design is therefore necessary in order to promote it, to make people in the design field know that it is a reality and it could be accomplished as is an appreciation of the causes of design exclusion before looking at methods of countering it.

Assistant Professor Zulkarnain bin Mohd Dahlim has been teaching design at Sohar College of Applied Sciences since September 2006. He started his career as a graphic designer after graduating from University Teknologi Mara, Malaysia with a Bachelor of Design in Graphic Design. He did his second Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in Printing technology at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and obtained his Masters degree in Visual Communication from The University of Central England, UK. His working experience in design ranges from being a Graphic Designer to Art Director, to Creative Director and as Assistant Vice President and Managing Director of design companies in Malaysia. He has worked in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and Singapore.

Abstract

The transformation of the Visual Design profession has undergone a massive change with the introduction of digital technology. As a designer, we need to constantly adapt and be aware of the current trends and technologies within our industry - in order to be relevant to the current development that is rapidly taking place in our Global Village. As a designer, our role is to provide creative solutions to design problems in the most effective way. Being creative is no longer sufficient in this era of IT & globalization. Designers need to be innovative in discipline and strategic in thinking; able to anticipate what’s coming & envisioning the future. These are must-have traits of a successful designer. The Digital Design discipline is a direct consequence of the advancements that has taken place in the IT revolution. New avenues were being created, where before, it was rare to associate technology with creating design artworks

Dr. Suha Ali Abdul Baqi Al Rammah

Dr. Suha received her Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Baghdad, Iraq in 2002 and gained her Ph. D (Fine Arts) from the same university in 2006. Currently she works as a lecturer at the Department of Design, College of Applied Sciences, Sohar, the Sultanate of Oman and the subject coordinator for History, Culture and Context. She was an associate member of the UNESCO program for the support of priority program areas (2007 – 2007) and also a member of the Association of Iraqi Plastic Artists since 1999 and the Iraqi Union Art.

The Importance of Theoretical Studies to Design Students?

One of the most important subjects in art is history, theory, culture & context. Many students take it very lightly. They feel that art history is not that important, while learning how to paint is. Actually, both are important. There is a reason for this. If you see the human evolution, we see the progress made by the early man to the present. The advantage is that we not only learn but also try to solve the problem (The missing links). An art student should keep his mind open to learn more about History, art theories, culture & contexts from different countries

Alhadi received his Bachelor of Industrial Design in 1985 from the College of Fine and Applied Art, Sudan University of Sciences and Technology and gained his Master in Education (Curriculum) from the College of Education, Khartoum University, Sudan in 2001. He is an Industrial Designer with experience extended to 19 years in industrial attachment and also teaching subjects as products and furniture design, workshop technology and model making. Alhadi is currently a lecturer at the Design Department, Sur College of Applied Sciences.

Abstract

Profile of Art and Design in Sudan

The documented features of art & design in Sudan was found first in the old Sudanese kingdoms (Meroe, Kush, Nubia, etc. 5000 BC – 350 AD), of course with in the concept of that period it was a part of people day life activities. But we can say that the education of art & design started in Sudan in the last years of the British colonial period when Mr. Greenlaw established the school of design in Gordon Memorial College in Khartoum since 1946 (now: University Of Khartoum), aiming to graduate art & design teachers. In this presentation I would like to reflect some contemporary features of art & design in Sudan through some professional Sudanese works in these fields, concentrating on industrial design (my field of specialization), and mainly on projects that related to community needs.

Assistant Professor Dr. Anwar Abd Elkarim Elkamary

Dr. Anwar is currently the Head of the Design Department at the Al Zahra College for Women, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman and her teaching experience started in 1981 at the Faculty of Fine Art, Alexandria University, Egypt. She is active in various associations, among which are as a member of the Artist Syndicate Egypt and member of the "LAttelie Group" and also the Animation group, Leipzig University, Germany.

Abstract

The Language of Design

The language of design has three basic facets namely Form, Color and Concept. Form is the composition of fundamental element in a design. Understanding form comes from developing the ability to see the intrinsic qualities of elements and the relationship between them. Color plays an important part in graphic design decision making, adding variety and mood. Concept refers to the idea generated and achieved through a selected design. A good composed design often exhibits the smart assimilation of Form, Color and Concept in a harmonious whole.

Abstract

“Design… the non verbal language”

Verbal Language is an integrated system of visual, auditory, or situational constraints that are recognized within certain group or society. Languages are an exclusively human mode of communication. Most languages make use of sound, but the combinations of sounds and symbols (letters) used do not have any inherent meaning - they are merely an unconscious agreed-upon convention to represent a certain thing by users of that language. Due to human activities development in all fields all over the globe, complexity and interactivity of different society’s, visual communication regains its important role as a global language that can be easily perceived by different societies regardless their verbal language, this is “Design… the non verbal language”n

Hande Mete has received her bachelor degree in architecture in 2002 and completed her M.Sc. in History of Architecture in 2006, at Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey. She has studied Italian language and literature for one year in Perugia, Italy in 2003. She initiated her doctorate (Ph. D) in Landscape Architecture at Ege University, Izmir, Turkey in 2007. Since 2006, she has been working as a lecturer at Interior Design Department, Yasar University, Izmir. She has developed and taught a range of undergraduate courses including, basic design, and history of art and architecture and interior design studio. Her research interests include history of art and architecture, ceramics, design history and sculpture.

Abstract

The art of Turk?sh Design

This paper aims to introduce contemporary Turkish approach in “the art of design”. Regarding the impact of globalization, Turkish design philosophy based on the integration of orientalism of the east and the modernism of the west has put an impetus on the evalution of Turkish Design. Consequently, an accelerating development has occured in the last two decades and enabled various design concepts to appear in changing subtitles. Regarding the current status, Turkish Design can be described through practices of designers classified as; Turkish Designers and Global Turks.. The eastmeetswest of Erdem Akan and the Tipsy of Defne Koz among with many other remarkable designers will be the medium displayed within the content of this paper

Big Ideas in Small Spaces

Owning a small house becomes the only option for many people who are living in big cities. Due to the high property prices and the need to live in large cities, according to the social and economical reasons, having an organized small space becomes more and more important. One of the biggest issues today is how to get the maximum advantage of these limited spaces. The solutions to these problems create big ideas where we can transform our living spaces into useful and practical homes. By using dividing and unifying elements, by using right colors in our wall or floor coverings or simply by using the necessary furniture that make our space more practical, we can come up with different design solutions for these problems. This paper aims to critique the use of space in small homes, in order to create practical living spaces for everyday life

Oget Cocen has received her bachelor degree in architecture in 2003 and completed her M.Sc. in Restoration in 2007, at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. She has conducted a research project for 6 months in 2006 and participated in another for two months in 2007 in Thessalonica, Greece. Since 2006, she has been working as a research assistant in Architecture Department, Yasar University, Izmir. She has been lecturing in basic design, architectural design and 3ds Max. Her research interests include restoration and conservation practices, tourism and heritage management and cultural influences in design.
